IMS report: analogue strong and growing in consumer camera market

According to a recent report from research firm IMS Research, North American unit shipments for consumer analogue cameras will surpass professional grade cameras by the end of this year.

The firm anticipates that shipments of analogue consumer cameras will exceed three million units in 2013.

Consumer surveillance equipment continues to sell well through brick and mortar as well as online retailers despite a challenging economy, says IMS. In a statement released by the company, Josh Woodhouse, IMS Research market analyst and report author says, “The Americas region is the largest and most mature regional market for consumer and DIY video surveillance equipment. The increased growth of analogue camera shipments in this market coupled with the decline in analogue unit shipments in the professional market means for the first time we are approaching a tipping point.”

Woodhouse adds that the cheap availability of analogue cameras could extend the life of analogue technology (versus IP) in the security space. In terms of revenue, however, consumer cameras still represent “just a fraction” of the professional market.
