Senstar celebrates 35th anniversary

Tuesday October 11, 2016
A Canadian company that ranks as one of the world’s largest manufacturers of perimeter intrusion detection systems (PIDS) is celebrating 35 years in business. Headquartered in Ottawa, Senstar was founded as a spin-off from Computing Devices Co. of Canada Ltd. (ComDev), which still exists as part of General Dynamics.

Three of the four founding partners were part of a security systems division at ComDev, and established Senstar with the objective of bringing security technologies originally targeted for military applications to the commercial market. Initially a seven-employee company, Senstar introduced its first product, a buried cable perimeter security technology called Sentrax, in September 1982. Early adopters included Correctional Service Canada, the British Home Office and Western Australia Corrections.

“A lot has changed since 1981, but Senstar’s commitment to safeguarding people, places and property has always remained the same,” said Senstar President Brian Rich, who is also one of the company’s original employees. “We are extremely proud to reach this 35-year milestone and we are looking forward to continued success for many years to come.”

Today, Senstar employs 75 people locally, with sales teams around the world, and boasts a broad range of security technologies including buried sensors, fence sensors, pipeline protection and personal duress. Its products are found in more than 80 countries, in tens of thousands of sites including borders, ports, military and government, oil and gas, correctional, VIP, and other critical sites.

Senstar also operates a comprehensive, private perimeter intrusion security test facility to ensure its products perform in the most extreme conditions.

Senstar is an active member of the community, supporting several local charities and volunteering on local projects.
