The Canadian Security Association (CANASA) held its annual two-day Toronto conference and exhibition, Security Canada Central, on Oct. 24 and 25. The event opened with a keynote address from David Shipley, founder and CEO of Beauceron Security, and included manufacturers' training sessions, education "Flash" sessions on the show floor, and more than 150 exhibitors. According to CANASA, 2,700 people attended SCC — a record number for the event.

Annual security industry trade show ISC West was held last week in Las Vegas, April 11-13. The event, sponsored by the Security Industry Association (SIA),  hosted more than 1,000 manufacturers and was expected to draw approximately 30,000 industry professionals. In addition to the usual roster of security-related companies, ISC West organized several specialty areas on the trade show floor including "Connected Home," featuring home automation products and services, "Global Expo," showcasing a large assortment of international security providers, and returning for a second year, the "Unmanned Security and Safety Expo," featuring drones, robots and other unmanned systems.

SP&T News visited with exhibitors and attendees at the ADI Expo Toronto on March 15, 2018. The annual conference and showcase is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year, and features educational seminars and exhibitors from across the security and audio industries. The distributor will hold additional events this year in Ottawa, Edmonton, Calgary, Winnipeg, Vancouver and Montreal.

The Canadian Security Association kicked off its annual Security Canada Central Toronto showcase, the largest show of its kind in Canada, with a focus on the monitoring community. CANASA brought back its Monitoring Symposium on Oct. 17 this year with speakers and content focused on how the industry is reacting — or in some cases not reacting — to the issues of self-monitoring and cybersecurity and the growing influence of companies like Amazon and Google on the home automation market. The speaker list included Bell Canada's Ken Short, ULC's Alan Cavers, CANASA executive director Patrick Straw and The Monitoring Association's new president Ivan Spector (the first Canadian ever to hold that position).

Securitas Electronic Security (Securitas ES) officially opened its new Toronto headquarters Tuesday with a ribbon-cutting ceremony and networking event for customers and vendor partners. Tony Byerly, Securitas ES president, based in the company's Cleveland office, presided over the ribbon-cutting with Dan Marston, senior director and general manager, Securitas ES Canada.

Security Canada Ottawa, held May 31, began with an opening session from Ottawa Police about how private businesses can work more effectively with police partners, as well as tips on how to report suspected incidences of fraud. The exhibit hall opened shortly after, showcasing exhibitors with expertise in access control, surveillance, home automation, monitoring solutions, and more. The event also hosted new CANASA appointees, national president Ellery Demedash, and executive director Patrick Straw. Past national president Richard McMullen introduced the morning session from Ottawa police. CANASA's next expo takes place in Vancouver on June 21.
