On Deck - In the March 2007 SP&T News

Technology focus:

RFID: bringing transparency to the supply chain

  • For years, as shippers prepared to send their cargo around the world, it seemed to disapper into a giant tube. They could see their cargo before it entered the tube and at the other end when it arrived at its destination, but what happened in between? Companies that ship sensitive products needed a way to bring more transparency to that tube. SP&T News speaks to experts about the use of Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology and how it can introduce transparency — the threats it may help deter, from the theft of pharmaceuticals to the protection of armaments as they make their way around the world.

Retail Security:

  • How The Source By Circuit City implemented high-security locking systems for product cabinets in more than 525 stores across Canada, improving customer service as well as reducing loss.

Legislation focus:

  • How are dealers and installers in British Columbia handling regulation? Some dealers say they are mired in red tape and warn other provinces to self-regulate or suffer the same fate. Regulation experts say it’s what the industry said they wanted.
